Joseph Montange

NWJJA Advanced No-Gi Instructor

  • 1st Degree Black Belt

Joseph began practicing martial arts at age 7 with Aikido, rising to fourth degree black belt by his mid-20's. While teaching Aikido, Joseph began cross training in BJJ in 2007. Inspired by the intensity, creativity, and brutal honesty of Jiu-Jitsu, Joseph resigned from Aikido in 2011 to dedicate himself to studying Jiu-Jitsu. Joseph began training with Brian Johnson at NWJJA in 2012 and received his black belt in 2019 and his first degree in 2022.

Joseph seeks to have a well-rounded and aggressive game, staying current as techniques evolve while remaining true to the core concepts and principles of the art. Joseph has successfully competed in regional competitions over the years, taking gold in several and winning his F2W match at brown belt in 2019.

As a teacher, Joseph seeks to explain concepts and principles behind techniques to help students learn why techniques work and when. Understanding concepts allows students to open up their approach to be more creative. As a lifelong martial artist, Joseph values the opportunity to teach and give back to the community.
